Emerald [05 May 2015|03:21pm]

wantedonvoyage
I was part of the crowd funding project for Dar's new album Emerald and received it the other day. Anybody else get it? So far "Weight of the World" is my favorite track.

is this community still active? [02 Sep 2013|12:54pm]

So my favorite Dar Williams songs are "What Do You Hear In These Sounds", "After All", "You're Aging Well", and "You Rise and Meet the Day"...does anyone have any suggestions for other songs or albums? The only two albums I have are Many Great Companions and Out There Live, and I literally can't stop listening to Many Great Companions. :)

"Fanfiction" (of a sort) based on the song "Iowa" [12 Jan 2013|11:44am]

therealjae
I thought at least some of the Dar Williams fans might be interested in this: this past holiday season, I took part in the "Yuletide" annual fanfiction exchange (it basically works like a 'Secret Santa' sort of thing: you write a story that someone else has requested, and you also receive one) and wrote someone's request for the story behind the song "Iowa."

Most of the other stories in the gift exchange are more traditional fanfiction--i.e. about characters from a television show or book or film--but since this story is very much about the narrator in the song, it's also fanfiction, in a way, even though people can read it as an original short story if they want. It's also set in the "West Wing" universe (but there are no characters from that show in it).

It's called "A Great and Gruesome Height."

I'm embarrassed to be posting this so late, but I wanted to get it out there, in case it interests other fans of Dar--

This is from Dar's show at the Birchmere (Alexandria, VA) in November, 2009...I just found it in my never-filed In Box...

Calling the Moon
The Easy Way
Beauty of the Rain
Spring Street
If I Wrote You
The Buzzer
You are Everyone
Summerday
Are You Out There
The Holly Tree
The Hudson
The Mercy of the Fallen
Midnight Radio

encore: Book of Love

Anyone else going to her show at ARTisphere this Sunday?  Still trying to figure out childcare, but I hope to make it!

Promised Land tree [31 Dec 2008|12:58pm]

soopahgrover
The Promised Land is a terrific album! I had the good fortune to hear her perform much of it live in Northampton, Mass last week.

Does anyone know what the tree she's holding on the cover is? I assume it's a baby tree sapling, but why does it look dead and dried up?

I bought a t-shirt at the show, and it's so soft and comfy and it's cut flattering, too! But it has an outline of this tree on it, and it is confusing me. :)

Just thought I'd mention that there's an article about Dar in Inside Chappaqua magazine (an apparently free local magazine). Article's online here.

DAR SHIRT FOR SALE [17 Nov 2007|03:47pm]

weetziefae
In the spirit of living a simpler life, I'm getting rid of things I've never worn. One of these things is an "are you out there" shirt. It's blue, a size medium (real size, not juniors size), and says "are you out there" on the front and on the back: "though the static walls surround me, you were out there, and you found me I was out here listening all the time...-Dar Williams" and has a radio tower behind it. Anyway, I'd love it to go to someone who will wear and enjoy it. I'd love to get $14 OBO (which would include shipping) for it. You can email me at erinfae@mtholyoke.edu. I recently left my job, so $10 pays for half my groceries for a week. It's a good situation. You get a shirt and I can buy butternut squash and tofu and eggs. Yes, a beautiful idea.

Thanks so much for reading

You know you're an obsessed Dar fan when... [01 Oct 2007|12:14pm]

macychick
[ mood | creative ]

You burst into song upon meeting someone from Iowa
You clap and cheer everytime you hear the word "babysitter"
You have been to Spring Street
You are a fan of at least one other bands/artist that you wouldn't have heard about if it hadn't been for Dar
You taught yourself to play guitar with one or more of her songs
You have asked your dad if you can be a Pagan
You bought (and read!) both of the Amalee books, even though you are over 25 years old
You tell people that you were the opposite gender as a child (i.e., if you are female, you say 'when I was a boy')
You don't go to therapy to find out if you're a freak, but you go for a "fifty-minute hour"
When your therapist says "Oh," you say "What, you think I'm angry? Does that mean you think I'm angry?"
You have protested the Treacherous Use of Fur
You want teenagers to kick your butt- unless, of course, they are "Teens For God"
You have called the moon
You went fishing in the morning, and you waded into the ocean in your workboots, and you learned the sea
When you babysit for the neighbor's kids, you dress like a hippy and teach them to make the peace sign

Can anyone think of some more? That's all I can come up with for now.

Dar at Ravinia [10 Sep 2007|09:37pm]

anwariel
Hello, fellow Dar fans!

I was lucky enough to see Dar live at Ravinia last Friday with thisisnotemily.  The performance was gorgeous, and so as not to forget it I wrote down the songs she played so that I could make a playlist.  The problem is, I simply can't remember the very first song she played.  Was anybody else at that concert, and could help me remember?  Thanks in advance.

music this july in Seattle area [12 Apr 2006|12:14am]

neatlynoted
Hi, fellow Dar fans. How's it going?

I'm a New Yorker and an acoustic music fan. I've just taken a summer job in Tacoma, WA, and I'm looking for advice from people familiar with the area (it's not far from Seattle, so info about Seattle counts, too). My biggest questions are twofold: can you point me in the direction of cool local acoustic music venues, and can you recommend some local singer/songwriters whose music I might be into?

Obviously, I'm looking for artists in the tradition of Dar. For reference, I'm also interested in the Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, Gregory Douglass, Eddie From Ohio, Girlyman, We're About 9, Robbie Schaefer, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Austin Willacy, Mieka Pauley, Richard Shindell, Tracy Chapman... you get the idea...

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for cross-posting.
-- Marisa

PS: Does anyone know when the 7/2 Indigo Girls tickets go on sale?

shot in a million [27 Mar 2006|12:34am]

macularholes
while visiting a friend in philly a few weeks ago (loved it) we caught the dar show on the 12th at some venue in jersey (scottish...something..only been to jersey twice, so i had no clue where we were. all i remember is that it was a theatre, used more for plays and very lowkey shows).

regardless, there was this fantastic singer opening for her, john (g)______?, and i'm trying to remember who he was and kicking myself for not bringing this up earlier/writing down.

was anyone else at the show/have any clue as to whom i've been speaking?

Here's the FRFF newsletter from Anne Saunders x-posted from the dar-list (emphasis is mine):

Here is a copy of our first FRFF 06 Enewsletter for the list, and unfortunately this is not a Dar year for us, every 2-3 years is tho. Also, will be restarting our discussion group shortly via AOL groups, am starting a sign up via our website shortly since the group we had courtesy of an MIT grad student for several years is no more, Anne
